I just saw Slumdog Millionaire and loved it! But I’ve also been listening to the debate over its depiction of India and Mumbai. This is a fairly traditional “rags to riches” story that might have been set anywhere, but the backdrop of one of the most populated places on earth made it more interesting (not disparaging), in my opinion.

I’m wondering if anybody else is seeing a higher level of interest at this point in time in movies and music with multicultural themes, or am I being overly influenced by “Obamania”

Regarding Slumdog Millionaire...I can understand the sensitivity. It did not paint a remotely positive image of India in my opinion, though it is getting a lot of praise and recognition. Large cities in India are often chaotic, growing and vibrant places, but there is much good about them too. That was obviously not the movie’s theme though.

Regarding the arts, yes I also notice more of an appetite for multicultural themes, which is great as I’ve often felt the U.S. can be a bit cloistered.

Me too on the arts. I’m lucky to be in one of the music capitals of the US, so we get really eclectic stuff here. I not long ago saw Manu Chau, a multicultural/mulitlingual rocker with Reggae, Ska, rock and Latin influences here in my home town of Austin. Awesome!

Manu Chau is great. And here’s to “Slum Dog” for winning best picture!
