New Zealand 2007
My whole life has always been a BLUR. I cannot remember a time in my life where I have not been surrounded by family, friends, and neighbors from different cultural backgrounds. Each and every one of the people I’ve met has given me an opportunity to learn something new and interesting. I am very lucky to have friends all over the world with whom I keep in touch on a regular basis.
We are a BLUR family at home. My husband was born and raised in San Francisco. My children attended a Spanish Immersion public elementary school where they learned to read and write in Spanish at the same time they learned to read and write in English. Since the school specializes in Global Studies, they have learned about many traditions and cultures. Our school was the only school outside of the Chinese community that celebrated Chinese New Year with its very own parade. Now the school celebrates “Carnaval Around the World” and each class participates with a dance from different parts of the world, from Hungary to Poland to Mexico and Brazil.
It was important to me that my children learn Spanish, not only so they could communicate with all their cousins in Mexico, but because I strongly believe that knowing two languages opens up a whole new world of possibilities. My whole family also shares a love of travel and we are lucky that our kids are always willing to try new experiences not only cultural but culinary. And of course being part of the BLUR community has it’s comical moments, like when my daughter participated in an activity in Mexico City where she had to read a horoscope and it took her 10 minutes to convince the moderator that yes, that blonde, green-eyed child could read in Spanish just as well as the other kids in the room!

I was born in Grand Canyon, AZ and before you ask: at the top, there used to be a hospital there, now it’s a YCC dorm.
When I was 8 months old I moved to Mexico City. I learned to speak English when I was 4 because it was the only way I could find out what my parents were talking about. He was Mexican, she is German, their common language was English and I just knew they were talking about me!
Growing up, I had the benefit of being exposed to different cultures: Mexican and German from my parents and family, and British through the elementary school I attended. My neighbors were from Aruba so I was also lucky to be exposed to their culture and traditions. So you can say that I grew up in a BLURRY environment.
