I come from a long line of lunatics from the state of Sinaloa in Mexico. Many of them migrated north to Sonora in the 1950s. That's where my father met my mother while he was living in San Luis, Rio Colorado, Sonora and working in Yuma, AZ. I was born there and came to the US at around the age of 3.
I grew up on an Indian Reservation in Poston, AZ- the Colorado River Indian Tribes Rez, where 4 tribes rule- Mojave, Chimahuevi, Navajo and Hopi. All my friends were either from Mexico (first gen.) or members of those tribes. I was a farm worker starting at age 10- hotter than hell in the summer heat but hanging with your friends is always fun.
During WW2, Poston was an internment camp for Japanese Americans (US citizens); my elementary school was built by them. Behind the trailer park we lived in were a bunch of old structures and such left over from the war, mostly foundations. We used to go out there and build forts and find all sorts of relics, mostly cool colored glass form the 40s. We broke everything with sling shots or BB guns. we were kids.
I went to high school at Parker High, I believe the "minorities" were the majority there. It was much more integrated with whites than my elementary school was.
Back to the lunatics south of the border...I've always remained close with most of them- my cousins. I have to admit that the traga arenas (sand eaters) in San Luis are crazier than the ones from Sinaloa. I've got a lot of cousins in Mazatlán, they're known as patas saladas (salty feet)- I've been going down there since I was a kid. I now take my family there to visit and connect with the family.
My wife is from New Jersey. Her family has always removed the skin from their chicken. I've always liked chicharones and menudo but that's fine- we've been married 22 years now so I guess culinary differences are okay.
I hear voices and when I don't I talk to them out loud until they talk back. Something like that.
More later...
