The process that went into creating the labradoodle did not happen overnight and while the original idea for the Labrador retriever and standard poodle was thought up in the 1970s, it wasn't until the 1980s that two official breeding research centers actually got together to help Australian labradoodle breeders create a standard for the breed. Before that time, some dogs that had been resulted from crossings had a double coat that would have come from the Labrador side while others had single coat that would have resulted from the Poodle and breeders decided to get together and create a single type.
