I didn't know it, but I've been a BLUR all my life! My father is from the US and my mother is Costa Rican. I catch myself looking at my mom and dad and thinking what an odd couple they make. They are going on 45 years of marraige so I guess they are actually a great couple.

I once overheard my daughter chatting with a friend from school when she was about 11 years old. She asked her friend where she was from and then told her that "We are from Costa Rica." Amanda was born in Burbank, CA and has lived her whole life in the United States, although she has enjoyed annual trips to Costa Rica to visit friends and family. I guess being American and also Costa Rican is simply the way we live and view ourselves. I don't think that view is contradictory or uncomfortable in the least bit. I think the bicultural BLUR is good for the soul and the senses.

I love being American and Costa Rican at the same time. I love the fact that our whole family has dual citizenship. I love the fact that I have a vast and varied circle of great friends from all backgrounds and walks of life. Being BLURed is being culturally rich and blessed.

I was born in San Jose, Costa Rica and moved to Indiana when I was 2 years old.  My dad wanted my 2 brothers and me to learn English as native speakers.

After 8 years in Indiana, my parents decided to move back to Costa Rica so we could gain native fluency in Spanish!  Being a parent now I admire their courage and foresight.  My sister, the youngest, joined our family along the way.  I remember going to see her on a trip back to Costa Rica when she was 10 months old.  We signed the adoption papers that same trip.

After graduating from high school in Costa Rica, I moved to Los Angeles, CA where my older brother had moved.  Culture shock was huge but adventure and optimism were even bigger.

After meeting and dating women from various parts of the US and a number of countries, I married a nice girl who was born about 7 months after I was in the same hospital.  We have 3 beautiful children, all born in Burbank, CA.
